Rebel Moon – Zack Snyder’s Star Wars meets Seven Samurai type movie gets some new cast and concept art

Zack Snyder and Netflix teamed up for Army of The Dead and they are working together on a new sci-fi film called Rebel Moon. Snyder dropped some new concept art and details of the cast over on Twitter.

It will star Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Sofia Boutella, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi and Sky Yang.

Snyder co-wrote the story with Kurt Johnstad and was originally a Star Wars film that never happened.

The film takes place on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand

Snyder has said himself the project is inspired by his love for Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa movies.

Snyder had discussed the film over on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast.

We talked about it, but it never…I’ve been working on it, just away from the Star Wars universe, just on my own as a sci-fi thing. It’s still a sci-fi thing, it’s the same story, it’s just kind of – let Star Wars be Star Wars. And the 11-year-old me still wants to make that. Now I just know how to, so maybe we’ll see that someday.

Season 2 of The Clone Wars featured an episode called Bounty Hunters that also featured a Seven Samurai style plot.

Snyder and his producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder are producing Rebel Moon with Wesley Coller through their company The Stone Quarry, along with Eric Newman through his Grand Electric banner. Sarah Bowen, also with Grand Electric, will executive produce.
