The movies we’ve mentioned above are all great, but we already know about them and most probably have seen them. So what can we expect in 2022? Here we take a look at the films we can look forward to this year.

Uncharted

In what feels like decades of stop-start progress, with dozens of stars and directors committed to the adaptation before dropping out, someone actually completed an Uncharted film. Tom Holland plays the treasure-hunting adventurer Nathan Drake, while Mark Wahlberg plays his wisecracking companion Sully. The film will serve as a prequel to the games, as viewers learn the details of how they came to meet. And, of course, the duo will be documented on their first expedition across the globe.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard are all back for this sixth entry in the dinosaur franchise. While details about the plot of the movie have been kept under lock and key, there is one thing we do know: the dinosaurs have escaped and roamed free in human civilisation. The film concludes the current trilogy of Jurassic World movies as well as the overarching storyline that began with the original in 1993.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

It might not be as popular as Harry Potter was at its peak, but a third Fantastic Beasts film is coming nonetheless. The Secrets of Dumbledore, set after The Crimes of Grindelwald, is about Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and his efforts to stop Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen, who recently replaced Johnny Depp) from taking over the wizarding world. More fantastical creatures will be incorporated into the plot, marking the halfway mark of a prequel series with two more Fantastic Beasts movies planned.

Top Gun: Maverick

2022 will finally see the release of the long-awaited sequel to the ’80s classic. “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, is still working as a flight instructor and test pilot at TOPGUN decades after his fateful encounter with enemy MiGs, Iceman and Goose. Maverick is now considered a relic of the past by his superiors, no longer the young rebel at the academy. The old man might be on his way out, but he still has a new generation of pilots to train, including Goose’s son, Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller).

Lightyear

In Toy Story, the action figure was a plastic one. The new animation, which pays homage to sci-fi films of the 1970s and 1980s, is a big-budget adventure movie based on the action figure. Angus MacLane’s debut features Chris Evans as Buzz. It may not be the original Tim Allen shouting “to infinity and beyond” to some fans’ dismay, but we imagine they are still eager to see the movie that made Andy want to buy the toy in the first place.

In the new movie, blue-skinned Neytiri and her human husband, Jake – played by Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, became parents on the planet Pandora, and humans have yet to solve the climate crisis. This has been an anticipated movie for over a decade since it was announced. But don’t get too excited; we still have to wait until the end of 2022 to enter the world of Pandora once more. The wait will surely be worthwhile.
