The Sanctity of Space – The new Alaskan mountain range documentary gets a UK release date

Dogwoof has announced that The Sanctity of Space, directed by Renan Ozturk & Freddie Wilkinson, will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 4 March. Alongside awe-inspiring photography of the Alaskan mountain ranges, the film tracks the work of famed nature photographer and explorer Brad Washburn whilst documenting the contemporary attempts of the filmmakers to tackle a hitherto unattempted trail inspired by his work.

More than eighty years after Brad Washburn first photographed Denali in Alaska, climbing buddies Renan Ozturk and Freddie Wilkinson look at some of Washburn’s images and have this crazy idea: rather than go up, their dream is to go sideways — across the range’s most forbidding peaks, the Moose’s Tooth massif. It’s a decidedly new school way to explore the same landscape Washburn first discovered.

As they pioneer the route over the course of two expeditions, enduring freezing bivies, cut ropes, and rockfall along the way, their desire to be the first to complete the audacious line grows into an obsession.

Renan Ozturk’s work as a filmmaker and climber has been seen by audiences worldwide, most notably with Meru and Sherpa. Alongside his career as a climber and guide, Freddie Wilkinson has written extensively on topics including Himalayan border conflict, climate change, and mountain history, most prominently for National Geographic Magazine and the Opinion Section of the New York Times.

THE SANCTITY OF SPACE will be in UK and Irish cinemas from 4 March.
