Cate Blanchett will star in Pedro Almodóvar’s first English language movie

Cate Blanchett has joined Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film, A Manual for Cleaning Women.

The film is an adaptation of Lucia Berlin’s short story collection of the same name, which includes 43 stories about women in multiple types of demanding jobs.

A Manual for Cleaning Women is a collection of short stories by Lucia Berlin. Published in 2016 by Picador Paperback, Berlin’s short fiction presents a cast of female characters of different ages and backgrounds. From pregnant teenagers to friendless children and unmarried middle-aged women, each story offers a different perspective on life’s struggles. Most of Berlin’s characters are alcoholics, and many could even be the same woman at various stages of her life. Berlin leaves her characters raw and exposed, forcing her readers to engage with some of the more brutal aspects of human nature – Super Summary

Pedro Almodóvar’s films are always worth a watch, and hopefully, an English language film will bring his work to a whole new audience.

Variety had the news that the film is in the early stages of development, with Blanchett’s production company Dirty Films producing the feature for New Republic Pictures, in association with El Deseo. Andrew Upton and Coco Francini are producing alongside Blanchett for Dirty Films. Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer are producing for New Republic Pictures alongside Almodóvar.
