The Rocketeer sequel is moving ahead and David Oyelowo could be strapping on the jetpack

1991’s The Rocketeer is a brilliant action-adventure movie, that not enough people saw at the time. Directed by Joe Johnston and based on the comics by Dan Stevens, the film starred Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton. I would have loved to have seen a sequel featuring those original characters, but it was not meant to be.

However, over the years there has been talk of sequels and reboot featuring different characters. Then it all went quiet, until today.

Deadline is reporting that Disney+ is working on a new movie titled The Return of the Rocketeer. David and Jessica Oyelowo are producing under their Yoruba Saxon banner. The project, written by Ed Ricourt (Now You See Me), will also be a possible starring project for David Oyelowo (Selma, Star Wars Rebels, A United Kingdom).

David Oyelowo in Don’t Let Go

Oyelowo is a fantastic actor so if he does take the role he is sure to be great in it.

The new story will follow on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle.

I like that direction a lot more than the one mentioned a while back that had a kid finding the jetpack. That’s all we know about the plot but as it will be a retired Tuskegee airman it sounds like it will be another period piece set after World War II. The first film was set in 1938 so this one could be set 10 years later maybe.

Whatever happens, it will be great to finally see The Rocketeer take to the sky once more.

What would you want to see in a new Rocketeer movie?
