MUBI picks up Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island

MUBI has announced that it has acquired all rights for Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island for the UK and Ireland, and plans to release the film theatrically.

Written and directed by Hansen-Løve (Things to Come, Eden), the film will receive its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, and stars Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Hanna, Das Boot) and Tim Roth (Chronic, The Hateful Eight, Pulp Fiction) along with Mia Wasikowska (Maps to the Stars, Crimson Peak, Stoker) and Anders Danielsen Lie (Personal Shopper, Oslo, August 31st).

Bergman Island tells the story of a couple of American filmmakers, Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth), who retreat to the mythical Fårö island for the Summer. In this wild, breathtaking landscape where Bergman lived and shot his most celebrated pieces, they hope to find inspiration for their upcoming films. As days spent separately pass by, the fascination for the island operates on Chris and souvenirs of her first love resurface. Lines between reality and fiction will then progressively blur and tear our couple even more apart.

The film is produced by Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinema (Things to Come, Eden, Mustang) and Rodrigo Texeira at RT Features. Co-producers are Erik Hemmendorff, Genevieve Lemal, Dietmar Güntsche and Julio Chavezmontes. Kinology is handling international sales.

Current and upcoming theatrical releases for MUBI in the UK and Ireland include First Cow from Kelly Reichardt, Ben Sharrock’s twice BAFTA nominated Limbo, Michel Franco’s New Order, Leos Carax’s Annette, Ninja Thyberg’s Sundance hit Pleasure, Céline Sciamma’s latest film Petite Maman and Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta. Previous theatrical releases have included Bacurau from Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria and Border from Ali Abbasi.
