Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade is getting a sequel in the shape of a TV show

Leigh Whannell’s 2018 Upgrade was a fantastic sci-fi action thriller. If you have not yet seen it, I highly recommend you rectify that as soon as possible.

Turns out that Whannell, who wrote and directed the original film, is working on a sequel in the shape of a TV show. Deadline had the news and said that the story moves forward a few years and has evolved version of STEM and a new host – imagining a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity.

Not sure if that sounds like it will just end up being another police procedural type show or something else.

Here is the synopsis for the original film.

In a near-future world, where technology controls everything, technophobe Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is the victim of a brutal mugging that leaves his wife dead and him paralyzed. A reclusive billionaire inventor offers him an experimental cure, an A.I. implant called STEM. Grey accepts and is immediately transformed into an unstoppable killing machine with enhanced strength and agility. Now it’s payback time.

The series is co-created and executive produced by Whannell and Tim Walsh (Treadstone) who serves as showrunner. Whannell (The Invisible Man) is set to direct. Blumhouse Television and UCP are collaborating on the adaptation, which has opened a writers room.

The fact that Whannell is heavily involved means I will definitely be checking this out.
