Oscars 2020: Parasite Makes History

On Sunday, February 9, the 2020 Academy Awards were handed out in Los Angeles.  The 92nd Oscars® went without a host for the second year in a row, instead relying on its presenters to entertain and bring continuity to the show.  But they kicked off in fine style with Janelle Monáe singing Mr. Rogers’ ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood’ before launching into her song ‘Come Alive’, with new Oscar lyrics.  Steve Martin and Chris Rock provided an opening monologue (I mean, just use them as hosts?) before the first award of the night went to Brad Pitt.  It took that long for the acceptance speeches to get political with Pitt saying, “They say I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the senate gave John Bolton this week.”

Also performing were Cynthia Erivo (also nominated in the best actress category for Harriet), Elton John, Chrissy Metz, Idina Menzel (alongside nine international ‘Elsa’s’), and Randy Newman who sang the five Oscar nominated original songs.  Eminem took to the stage to perform Lose Yourself after a montage honouring music and film (watching the A list audience dance in their seats was just as entertaining) earning himself a standing ovation.  Billie Eilish also sang the song ‘Yesterday’ in the memorial montage.

Heading into the awards ceremony, Joker led the pack with 11 nominations, followed closely behind by The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood which each had 10 nods.  By the end of the night Parasite had taken the top prize and four Oscars overall, and Joker took home just two statues (Best Score, Best Actor).  Parasite was the first International Film to also take the Best Picture prize.
