The Lumière Brothers’ 1895 short Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat has been given a 4K restoration by Neural Networks

L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat (translated from French into English as The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station, Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (US) and The Arrival of the Mail Train, and in the United Kingdom the film is known as Train Pulling into a Station) is one of the most famous short films of all time. You have probably seen it at some point in your life.

The short illustrates the use of the long shot to establish the setting of the film, followed by a medium shot, and close-up. (As the camera is static for the entire film, the effect of these various “shots” is affected by the movement of the subject alone.) The train arrives from a distant point and bears down on the viewer, finally crossing the lower edge of the screen. It was filmed by Louis and Auguste Lumière in 1895 and shown in 1896 and you can watch the original below.

As you can see it has that old timey-wimey look which is to be expected. However, Denis Shiryaev decided to upscale the short to 4K resolution and 60 FPS using neural networks. As you can see below it looks incredible and feels like it is was shot today.
