Spider-Man no longer in the MCU? Marvel Studios and Sony unable to make a new deal

Yesterday afternoon came news that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures (who own the film rights to Spider-Man which they acquired back in 1999) were unable to make a new deal which means Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is no longer part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is either due to financial reasons, producer credits or a mix of the two.

Holland has been in five Marvel movies:

  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home

Sony commented on Twitter:

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film.

We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.

Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.

This is such a shame as it was great seeing Spidey mixing it up with the Avengers and Nick Fury. Going forward that means we won’t be seeing Spider-Man with any of the New Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and other Marvel characters. It also means that in the Sony Spider-Man movies we won’t be seeing any of those characters either. It looks like Happy and Aunt May’s relationship is truly at an end.

Sony is planning two more installments, though it is an open question whether Jon Watts will return to direct them.

Holland is such a great Spider-Man and having him in the MCU worked so well.

It also means that Sony won’t have Kevin Feige’s guidance for the new Spidey films and before he was involved we had The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Does Sony not remember that?

I think that Sony is overly confident after the success of the Spider-Man movies with Marvel and with how well Venom did (856.1 million USD Worldwide). Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse was another huge success. The latter film could also be the key with how they deal with things going forward. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gets pulled into a slightly different direction with all the usual Spidey supporting cast, but none of the MCU characters.

It also means we won’t get to see J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson commenting on the other MCU heroes and no more Iron Spider!

Deadline had this to say about the events – “sources maintain that Feige’s exit was about money; it was about Disney seeking the 50/50 co-fi stake as the price for Marvel and Feige’s continued guiding hand that resulted in the delivery of Sony’s biggest grossing film ever. Sony declined to meet those terms. It was an aggressive stance by Disney, which already owns the merchandise on Spider-Man, and a tough nut for Sony to swallow, giving up half of its most valuable franchise. But these talks had been going on for some time. Had Sony agreed to Disney’s ask, Marvel and Feige would not have withdrawn from the Spider-Man films, sources said.”

I am extremely disappointed with the whole situation. Jeremey Renner also wants Spider-Man to stay.

How do you feel about no more Spidey in the MCU?
