Star Wars TV Shows
Nick Nolte is joining The Mandalorian, one of the new live-action Star Wars TV shows in development for the Disney+ streaming service. This is the one that Jon Favreau is working on. Nolte joins Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano in the cast. Pascal plays a character who hails from the planet Mandalore. Both Nolte and Carano’s role are under wraps. Executive producer Jon Favreau has said the series set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order.
Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) is directing the first episode; also on board to direct are Taika Waititi, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Disney also has a series based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with Diego Luna returning from the film to star as Cassian Andor. The Americans writer and producer Stephen Schiff has officially signed on as showrunner.
Marvel’s Shang-Chi
Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors.
The character was conceived in late 1972. Marvel had wished to acquire the rights to adapt the Kung Fu television program, but were denied permission by the show’s owner, Warner Communications (now WarnerMedia), owner of Marvel’s primary rival, DC Comics. Instead, Marvel acquired the comic book rights to Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. They developed Shang-Chi, a master of kung fu, who was introduced as a previously unknown son of Fu Manchu.
M. Night Shyamalan’s new series
Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) has signed on for a supporting role in Apple’s upcoming psychological thriller series from M. Night Shyamalan (Unbreakable, Split) and British TV writer Tony Basgallop (24, To The Ends of the Earth). He joins previously announced Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) and Nell Tiger (Game of Thrones).
The plot of the series has not been revealed, but Deadline report that it follows parents Dorothy (Ambrose) and Sean Turner, who have hired young nanny Leanne to help care for their newborn child. Grint will play Julian Pearce, Dorothy’s (Ambrose) younger brother.

A Quiet Place sequel
John Krasinski has been talking to Business Insider about the plans for the follow up to A Quiet Place.
But me going from not wanting to participate in a sequel to doing it is the same reason I hope people will want to see one. My hope is people want to revisit this world and revisit those stakes and those rules you have to abide by. That’s my hope.
So for a sequel, I think I kind of have to do the same thing. If I start focusing on something I have never done before and asking people how they did it, then I’ll dilute the experience. I don’t even see it as a sequel. Emily actually blew my mind by categorizing it the correct way after I pitched it to her. She said, “This isn’t a sequel at all — this is the second book in a series of books. It’s a widening of a world.”
And I thought that’s the best way to look at it. It doesn’t feel like a sequel — it’s a continuation of living in that world.
Preacher
Season 4 of Preacher has been given the go-ahead at AMC. Production on Season 4 will begin in Australia in early 2019 – Variety
Pinocchio
Tom Hanks is in early talks to play Geppetto in Disney’s live-action adaptation of its classic animation, Pinocchio, which Paul King, the filmmaker behind the Paddington movies, is attached to direct.
Chris Weitz and his Depth of Field partner Andrew Miano are producing the pic. The script is by King, Weitz and King’s Paddington collaborator Simon Farnaby.
Currently, there is a competing Pinocchio project in the works at Netflix, with Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro set to write and direct a stop-motion musical version for the streamer – THR
Hobbs & Shaw
Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver) has joined Universal’s Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
The role was a last-minute addition, and sources say execs favoured Gonzalez, but scheduling had to be worked out with Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong,”which features Gonzalez and is also about to begin shooting.
Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby are also on board with David Leitch directing. “Fast and Furious” architect Chris Morgan penned the script – Variety
Kingsman Prequel
Rhys Ifans is in talks to join Matthew Vaughn‘s prequel Kingsman prequel. Daniel Brühl and Charles Dance have also joined the cast. The film will not feature franchise star Taron Egerton as Eggsy. Instead, Harris Dickinson (FX’s Trust) will play Conrad, a cocky yet charming young hero who’s eager to serve his country and fight in World War I. Two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes will co-star in the movie, which will start filming in January in London.
According to Collider, the prequel is more of a period drama than a spy thriller, and the story centers around “the man who would be Kingsman.”
Matthew Goode is also being eyed for a role, according to sources, though we have yet to confirm his casting.
Blue Beetle
DC and Warner Bros. are developing a new movie based on Blue Beetle. This will be looking at the Jaime Reyes version of the character.
In the comics, Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes is the third character to assume the mantle of the Blue Beetle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord. Jaime Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.
Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s “Scarface,” has been tapped to write the screenplay.
