Review: Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 – “All killer no filler”

The adventures of Ash (Bruce Campbell) from the Evil Dead trilogy – and very briefly the remake – have continued on the small screen for the last few years in Ash vs Evil Dead. The show is an absolute riot and the third and final series is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK.

After the death of his father (Lee Majors) and the defeat of the Deadites, Ash has now taken over the family DIY store and is using it to flog both hardware and now dildos, while sidekick Pablo (Ray Santiago) is flogging fish and chips, and the errant Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) is working in a bar and kicking the patron’s asses.

But when an Antiques Roadshow host reads from the Necronomicon during a live broadcast: the Deadites are back baby, and the gang once again unites to fight evil and be flipping funny and awesome, and often super gross, while doing so.

Series 3 sees Ash battling fatherhood as well as monsters this time around when he discovers he has a teenage daughter. The misogynistic Margherita-swilling blowhard assholes attempts at parenting re insane and hilarious – including violating his freshly deceased wife’s body at the funeral and handing down the worst advice ever.

Every episode of the third and last season is all killer no filler, Ash vs Evil Dead series 3 is ten half-hour chunks of balls to the wall raditude featuring the Delta, the chainsaw, the camerawork possessed by the spirit of Sam Raimi, the fantastic practical effects, one-liners and the splatstick humour that is grosser and more disrespectful than ever.

Audio-wise the whole series has a great surround track that will constantly keep you on your toes, and as the DVD we checked out looked great, the Blu will probably be incredible. There are also a few extras: a Making Of, “Season Overview” recap, and selected episode audio commentaries.

The show is also now available as a series 1-3 set chronicling the entire adventure in one binge-worthy box, with the first two series coming with the following extras; Season 1: Audio commentaries on all episodes, Ash Inside The World, How to Kill a Deadite and Best of Ash; Season 2: Audio commentaries on selected episodes, Inside the World of “Ash vs Evil Dead” Season 2, First Look and eight featurettes.
