Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble In Little China will continue the story

It has been a while since we heard anything new about Dwayne Johnson’s new version of Big Trouble In Little China. It had thought to have been a remake of the classic John Carpenter film that starred Kurt Russell as Jack Burton.

It seemed like an odd thing to do, but it seems that plans have changed.

During a recent interview with Collider, Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions (which was founded by co-CEOs Johnson and Dany Garcia) it turns out the new film will be a continuation of the story. Johnson will also be playing a new character.

There’s a lot of things going on with [Big Trouble in Little China]. We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China. You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of Big Trouble in Little China. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character. So we are just having a lot of fun. We’re actually in a really great space with the story that we’ve cracked. But yeah, no remake. It is a continuation, and we are deep into development on that as well, and I think you’ll start hearing some things about that probably soon.

Of course, this could all end up just being a remake in all but name, but it does appear that they have been listening to the response of fans to the original.

Still early days on this oneas Johnson has a stack of other movies to make first.

If they do go this way, there is also the slight chance we could get Kurt Russell back as Jack Burton!

How do you feel about the new film and what would you want to see happen in it?

I shared my thoughts on a sequel to Big Trouble In Little China in an episode of After the Ending which you can listen to below.
