John Woo is remaking The Killer and Lupita Nyong’o may have the lead role
The Killer is the 1989 movie directed by John Woo. It starred Chow Yun-fat as an assassin who accidentally damages the eyes of the singer during a shootout. He later discovers that if the singer does not undergo an expensive operation she will go blind. To get the money for the operation he decides to perform one last hit.
A remake has been in development for a long time, but it seems that the film is now moving ahead at Universal Pictures. John Woo will direct it and Deadline are reporting that it is being developed for Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave, Black Panther) to play the lead role.
Eran Creevy (Collide) rewrote the script based on an original draft by 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken. It is thought the film will follow the basic plot of the original, with Lupita’s character accidently blinding a woman.
The original film is fantastic and has influenced many other directors over the years. Apparently the remake “will blend espionage with extraordinary stunts to capture the feel of the original.” I assume there will also be doves flying around in slow motion at some point. Universal VP Production Sara Scott will oversee for the studio.
Production will begin later this year in France and Germany.
