Gary Whitta is working on a new version of The Last Starfighter and he has shared some concept art
Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.
With those words, we were taken on a wild adventure back in 1984. We followed Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) as he found out that being really good at a video game meant he was recruited to join the team of best starfighters to defend their world from attack.
I do love the film and talked about it way back in episode 9 of the After the Ending podcast.
There has been talk of a remake/reboot over the years, but Jonathan Betuel, who wrote the original film, has always said no. However, that seems to have changed as Gary Whitta (Rogue One) has shared the news that he is working on a new film.
Whitta spoke to io9 about the new version of the film and why he feels now is the right time to bring it back.
I like the original film, but have always wanted to see more so I am up for a new movie set in the same universe. There are no plot details or any other information at the moment, but I will keep you posted.
What would you like to see in a new Last Starfighter film?
Check out the concept art by Matt Allsopp below.
Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel. You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp (lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE) for creating these images for us. pic.twitter.com/CIobLYYRHk
