– Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego has been brought onboard by Universal to direct their Backdraft sequel, currently called Backdraft II, with filming set to begin in Romania and Toronto next month. William Baldwin is expected to reprise his role from the original Ron Howard directed 1991 film. The new film will follow Sean McCaffrey, the grown son of Kurt Russell’s character from the first film, an investigator with the Chicago F.D who still holds his uncle (Baldwin) responsible for the death of his father. The bad guys in this one are a group of agents sneaking a missile out of the country, using a series of deadly fires as a distraction – MovieHole

Tessa Thompson is joining her Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth in Sony’s Men in Black reboot. Fate of the Furious filmmaker F. Gary Gray is set to direct the movie, written by Iron Man screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. Sony’s reboot is to feature new characters rather than Agents K and J, portrayed by original trilogy stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, respectively, and will build on the contemporary sci-fi world in which they operated. Details are being kept hidden under a New York City ventilation tower, but sources say the new project is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope – THR

Dakota Johnson and Zazie Beetz are in talks to join Armie Hammer in Annapurna’s untitled thriller. Under the Shadow helmer Babak Anvari is writing and directing the film. The film is on the fast-tracking, with a March 29, 2019 release date. The film follows a New Orleans bartender (Hammer) whose life begins to unravel after a series of disturbing and unexplainable events transpire when he picks up a phone left behind at his bar. Lin Shaye (Insidious) is joining Sony’s new version of The Grudge. Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir and John Cho. Nicolas Pesce is directing the horror film from his own script.

Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan have signed on for the darkly comedic thriller Villains, from Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. The pic stars Bill Skarsgård and Maika Monroe as a pair of amateur criminals who, after breaking into a suburban home, stumble upon a dark secret and two sadistic homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out – Deadline

Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), has joined Matt Smith in Charlie Says, an indie centering on the Charles Manson murders. Mary Harron, who directed American Psycho, is helming the project that sees Smith portraying the infamous cult leader. Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation), Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones), Odessa Young (Assassination Nation), Marianne Rendon (Imposters) and Carla Gugino (Watchmen) also star. Crawford will play Tex Watson, a murdering member of the Manson family who was involved in the killing of actress Sharon TateTHR

Michael Landes is set for the next installment in the Olympus Has Fallen film series, Angel Has Fallen, which has Gerard Butler returning as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning as well as Morgan Freeman as President Trumbull. Landes will play Sam Wilcox, the Chief of Staff to President Trumbull in the Ric Roman Waugh-directed sequel. This time, Banning is framed for the attempted assassination of the President and must elude his own agency and the FBI as he tries to uncover the real threat – Deadline

Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad) joins Amazon’s straight-to-series drama The Boys. The project is based on the comic book by Preacher writer Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Supernatural and Timeless creator Eric Kripke is adapting. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, who executive produce Preacher, are attached to direct. Previously announced cast includes Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Jesse T. Usher, and Nathan Mitchell. Fukuhara will play Female, an Asian assassin with blistering fighting skills, who happens to have superpowers and uses them for explosive evisceration. When The Boys find her, she’s savage, doesn’t speak, and is a complete mystery. She later learns what it means to be human through her relationship with Frenchie – The Tracking Board

Craig Di Francia (Power) will appear in Martin Scorsese’s Netflix film The Irishman starring Robert De Niro as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a reputed hitman suspected of involvement in the 1975 disappearance of the Teamsters leader. The film is based on Charles Brandt’s novel, I Heard You Paint Houses, which Steve Zaillian adapted for the screen. No word on a release date yet. The film also stars Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel – Deadline
