Smoking cigars never looked cooler than it does on the big screen. We look at some of our favourite cigar smoking characters from film and television!

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer in Predator

Playing Vietnam vet, Dutch, in this action/sci-fi classic, Schwarzenneger faces off against an alien threat after his special forces team gets hunted down by a mysterious extraterrestrial creature. Despite the constant danger, Dutch saves the world in style; only he could be cool enough to light up a stogie as he goes toe-to-toe with this otherworldly enemy. As a cigar aficionado off-screen, we’re sure Arnie loved this role even more!

Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name in A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

This iconic trilogy of spaghetti Westerns firmly placed Clint Eastwood on the map. The intriguing character, The Man With No Name, was made all the more mysterious by his penchant for skinny cigars. Not known for his words, this character’s lips were more likely to be seen with a cigar hanging between them. Perhaps the most iconic scene of the series, the famous ‘Mexican Standoff’ in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, sees Eastwood with a cigar between his lips for the duration of the incredibly tense scene. It doesn’t even drop as he shoots Angel Eyes, the films’ antagonist. As the rumours go, Eastwood brought his own American cigars to the Italian film set. We’re definitely glad he did, as he certainly made cigar smoking look cool!

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise

Jackman’s take on the clawed comic-book mutant made his debut back in 2000, in the original X-Men movie, a role he has reprised nine times to date. From time to time, of course, he has to take a break from fighting the baddies, retract those talons, and relax with a stogie. His cigar of choice? The Cohiba Cigar, of course! Somehow Logan is made cooler by the air of controversy surrounding his cigar smoking. As a film series loved by adults and kids alike, non-smoking advocates have been putting pressure on the studio to stop the Wolverine puffing! We certainly hope such a badass cigar aficionado is never stopped!

Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface

The acclaimed mob crime drama movie sees Pacino as Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who makes it to the top in America as a drug kingpin. Montana has a taste for the finer things in life; women and cigars included. Not straying far from his roots, Tony Montana is keen on the Cuban cigars, which he smokes throughout the film. Cigars can be used in films as a sign of status, and this is undoubtedly the case in Scarface, with the cigar smoking a great way of expressing Tony’s ascent into a dominant and authoritative character. While Tony didn’t survive the film, his iconic quotable phrases certainly have. Truly a masterpiece!

Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye

There isn’t a massive line of women queueing up to make it onto this list, but we’re glad there’s this one. Xenia Onatopp, one of the best Bond bad girls, went up against Pierce Brosnan’s iteration of our fave spy in the 1995 film GoldenEye. When this Russian beauty isn’t smoking a stogie, she’s crushing a man to death between her thighs; a true femme fatale! The cigar certainly helps to emphasise her seductive nature, power and wealthy status.

The rarity of female cigar lovers make this seductive villainess all the more iconic; even if she is scheming to murder you!

John Astin/Raul Julia as Gomez Addams in The Addam’s Family

Patriarch of the kooky clan, the Addams family, Gomez always oozes with class in his signature style of pinstripe suits, with a cigar in hand. We can’t decide which characterisation we love better; John Astin’s classic TV version, or Raul Julia’s movie adaptation! Smoking since the age of five, Mr. Addams can most definitely be considered a cigar aficionado. He certainly does love his cigars, spending around $1000 each month on his interest; why not if you’re a billionaire like him, we guess!

George Peppard as John ‘Hannibal’ Smith in The A-Team

On the run from military police, a group of ex-special forces soldiers help the little guys, whilst leaving a trail of explosions in their path. This team of vigilantes is led by Hannibal, a man with a cigar often stuck within his grin. With a somewhat manic glee when blowing something up, which he did rather a lot, he’d celebrate with a cigar. Sometimes this even went as far as using the cigar to light explosives responsible for blowing stuff up. We can only dream of being that cool!

Michael Richards as Cosmo Kramer in Seinfield

Not quite as much the embodiment of cool as the others on this list, but the comedy brought to the show by Kramer more than makes up for it. But of course, coolness isn’t exactly the reason people are making it to this list, but rather the fact that they smoke cigars. And Kramer smokes Cubans. He loves them so much he goes as far as to set up a smoking club in his apartment! A number of his plotlines revolve around his love of cigars; remember the time he tried to hire Cubans to roll cigars in an attempt to sell his own Cuban cigars in New York? As per usual, the plan goes a little awry, as they turn out to be Dominicans!
