Chucking axes with The Walking Dead Series 7

To celebrate the release of the The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season – which arrives on Blu-ray™ and DVD on 25th September – Live for Films was recently invited along to London’s top axe throwing joint, Whistle Punks, to learn how to throw Negan’s second favourite weapon.

In Season 7, apart from his baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, Lucille, Negan’s weapon of choice to mentally break Rick, was an axe. So to commemorate Series 7’s release, we were going to get to choose whether we were Team Rick, or Team Negan, and then CHUCK SOME AXES AT STUFF!

THE WALKING DEAD’s record breaking season 7 premiere dramatically kicked off as Negan brutally forced Rick and Alexandria to fall under his will after killing two fan favourites.

After the Saviours impose cruel and corrupt rule upon Alexandria, Rick realises that Negan cannot be reasoned with. He and his group have to prepare to go to war with the Saviours and take Negan down once and for all. Victory will require more than just the supplies and numbers in Alexandria and while in pursuit of more weapons, food and new fighters, Rick and the group will be tested in ways we’ve never seen before.

They’ll explore a world that is much bigger than anything they’ve encountered and discover new factions (The Kingdom, Oceanside and The Scavengers) that will aide and test Alexandria’s fight against the Saviours. The group will rise up and band together with new allies, but are they prepared for an all-out battle with Negan and his army?

Tucked into an arch beneath Vauxhall railway bridge is Whistle Punks – a bespoke axe throwing emporium where highly trained staff teach you how to hold and hurl hatchets. After a safety intro, and signing waivers to cover us in the event of an axe-in-the-face mishap, myself and the Daryl to my Carol: Christa from DIY Magazine, stepped up to see what we were made of.

With the guidance of our mentor Patrick, we were soon burying our blades in the bullseye and ready for a tournament. Split into Team Rick and Team Negan, we threw like ours – and the populations of Alexandria and The Kingdom’s – lives depended on it.

It was awesome fun, and highly recommended. The axes weight is not too much for anyone who isn’t Jason Momoa, and you don’t actually need to throw as hard as you would think to sink your razor sharp edge into the target. Snacks and drinks are readily available, there are loads of lanes, and the staff will get you confident and competent in no time.

Thanks to The Walking Dead Series 7 and the fine folk at Whistle Punks, I could now quite confidently take down any walkers or Saviours if there is a zombie apocalypse anytime soon. As long as there are some axes lying around. And the walkers or Saviours stand really still.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season is available on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
