TIFF Day 10 – C’est la Vie!
The final day of the Toronto International Film Festival. The crowds at last day screenings were rowdy and showed bittersweet excitement to the end. But day 10 has only one gala premiere – and that is the closing film. There are still some screenings Sunday and still the announcement of the People’s Choice award to come, but Saturday night marks the somewhat official end to the ten-day festival.
While in some years the festival has seemingly ended without much fanfare, last year, the closing film was The Edge of Seventeen with Woody Harrelson and Hailee Steinfeld, one that garnered positive reviews from critics. This year, the fest has chosen to close with a French film entitled C’est la Vie! Seems pretty appropriate for the finale!
The film comes from directing duo Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, who both earned accolades for 2011’s The Intouchables. Funnily enough that film premiered at this year’s festival in its English language version starring Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart and Nicole Kidman, called The Upside. C’est la Vie! is a comedy set at an extravagant wedding with a caterer who just wants to get through the night, despite an ensemble of characters who seem to be set on causing disaster.
Crowds gathered at the last red carpet as the premiere started with the cast in attendance. Then the carpets cleared, the photographers went home and just like that, the festival has finished. The good news is, it’s less than a year until it starts all over again, and who knows the cinematic feast that will await us then. The countdown is on.
