Deadpool’s Tim Miller to direct William Gibson’s Neuromancer

“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”

Tim Miller (Deadpool) ended up leaving Deadpool 2 due to creative differences last year. He is currently involved in the new Terminator reboot that James Cameron has been talking about.

Turns out he may also be heading into cyberspace. Deadline is reporting that Miller and his VFX studio Blur will be bringing us an adaptation of 1984’s Neuromancer by William Gibson for Fox.

Neuromancer won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards and is a great read. There have been many attempts to bring it to the big screen, but they’ve never gone anywhere. The writer who gave us the matrix and coined the term ‘cyberspace’ produced a first novel that won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards, and lit the fuse on the Cyberpunk movement. I have loved it since I first read it back in the 80s. Since then there have been many other books, films, TV shows and video games that have been part of the cyberpunk genre. They have built on the groundwork laid down by Gibson.

Case was one of the best console cowboys until he stole from one of his employers, who in turn damaged his nervous system so that he cannot access cyberspace anymore. Broke and destroying himself, Case is contacted by Molly, a heavily modified razorgirl, to work for a shadowy colonel who needs a cyberspace cowboy for a secret mission. The employer fixes Case’s damaged brain, but implants a slow dissolving poison to make sure the cyberspace wiz does his bidding, in attempting to abduct a perverse psychopath who is able to create holograms with the force of his mind.

The question is, can the film make the original books seem fresh and new or will people just think it is ripping off more recent things? Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One just takes the concept of cyberspace and runs with it.

Tim Miller and Blur have shown they can bring us visually creative scenes and as long as they give Neuromancer a unique look then they could well be the best people to work on this.
