The Fly – Nikyatu Jusu is working on a new film set in the universe of David Cronenberg’s film

Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny, Night of the Living Dead sequel) is going to direct a new version of The Fly. The new body horror film is based on the David Cronenberg classic of the same name. However, it does not appear to be a straight remake. The 1986 film is based on George Langelaan’s 1957 short story, which was previously adapted as a 1958 film starring Vincent Price.

Deadline had the news that “while the film’s plot is under wraps, sources stressed that it’s set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straightforward remake.”

A landmark in both science fiction and horror cinema, Cronenberg’s The Fly follows scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), whose experiments with teleportation take a terrifying turn when his DNA is accidentally fused with a fly’s. His transformation is both physical and psychological, a deterioration that blurs humanity and monstrosity.

It looks like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance has reminded studios that there is money to be made with body horror

Nikyatu Jusu will direct from her own script, with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping producing. Jusu, is also working on an adaptation of her short Suicide by Sunlight for Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. That film is “about day-walking Black vampires who are protected from the sun by their melanin.” MGM has also acquired the rights to a Night of the Living Dead sequel that Jusu is set to direct.
