Mike Flanagan will direct a new Exorcist film
Last year’s The Exorcist Believer from David Gordon Green was supposed to be the beginning of a new Exorcist trilogy. Reviews were not good and it faired poorly at the box office. Green left the proposed sequels and they were shelved.
Now comes news that Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep) will write, direct and produce a “radical” new entry in the franchise according to a press release from Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek.
This makes sense as Universal and Blumhouse bought the rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek for $400m in 2021 so they will want to make some money back.
Flanagan is a good pick as he has made some excellent horror films and TV shows. He had this to say about the new project.
“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” said Blumhouse Boss Jason Blum.
“It’s an honor to be working with Mike. I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide, and I could not be more excited to be working with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire Blumhouse Team,” said David Robinson, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek.
