Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are returning to make a new sequel to 28 Days Later

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the director and writer of 2002’s 28 Days Later, are reuniting for 28 Years Later. There was, of course, 28 Weeks Later in 2007 but Boyle and Garland were just executive producers on that film.

According to Deadline, Boyle is attached to direct the first installment of what is planned to be a new trilogy. Garland would write all three. The budget for each movie would be in the $75 million range.

There are no plot details at the moment.

The pair would also produce, as would original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, the former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the division of onetime studio Twentieth Century Fox that originally backed the British-made movie and its sequel.

The original film starred Cillian Murphy as a man who wakes from a coma to find England has fallen due to the Rage virus getting out of a lab and infecting the population. Those infected were not technically zombies, but we all know it was that kind of vibe. It was a great film, with those haunting images of a confused Cillian Murphy wandering around a deserted London.

As for 28 Weeks Later, I enjoyed it and how it built on the original.

Since then there have been numerous zombie/pandemic movies so I do wonder how Boyle and Garland will bring something new once again to the genre. They are both brilliant filmmakers so I have faith that it is going to be worth the watch.

What would you like to see in 28 Years Later?
