Everything you need to know about the new Transformers franchise Director, Steven Caple Jr.

Steven Caple Jr. was just eight years old when he watched the original animated Transformers film on a VHS tape. Little did he know it would eventually lead him to helm his third and most significant feature film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.  The young director has already made a significant impact on the film industry in a relatively short time. His diverse filmography has showcased his creativity and storytelling abilities, earning him numerous accolades and achievements.

In this feature, we will take a dive back into his decade-long career and journey to directing Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Steven Caple Jr.’s debut film The Land starring Erykah Badu and Machine Gun Kelly, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Following its release on 29th July 2016, Caple Jr. was named one of the 25 best breakthrough directors of 2016 by The Playlist. His success continued to grow, and a couple of years later he was recognised by Forbes as one of the “30 Under 20” in Hollywood & Entertainment.

In 2018, Caple Jr. was handpicked by Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan to direct the Creed sequel, Creed II. The film was met with positive reviews and further cemented his position as a rising star in the film industry. He proved his ability to handle big-budget productions and collaborate with major studios and established actors to create emotional and engaging stories.

Already a big fan of Beast Wars: Transformers, he didn’t need much convincing when he was approached to bring the Maximals to the big screen for the seventh instalment of the franchise. Aged 33 at the time, he was the youngest filmmaker and first person of colour to helm a live-action Transformers film.

Caple Jr. has described Transformers: Rise of the Beasts as “a little grittier, a little more grounded than the other films”. He went for a realistic tone and grounded element when dealing with the characters that hadn’t been seen before, whilst humour helped the characters to find comic relief within real life and trauma in the story. Another part of Caple Jr.’s vision was to have a greater focus on the authenticity of other cultures and traditions encountered around places which brought a new feel to the franchise.

His personal connection provided an even deeper level of understanding to the project which fueled him to deliver a memorable and thrilling cinematic experience for fans old and new. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for him next.
