Cool Art: The Phantom by Henrik Sahlstrom
Defenders of the Earth! Defenders….!
I first met The Phantom in the Eighties cartoon, Defenders of the Earth. I had seen Flash Gordon in reruns of the old Buster Crabbe serials and the 1980 film, but this was my first time seeing The Ghost Who Walks, Mandrake the Magician, Lothar and more. I enjoyed all the characters and it caused me to do a deep dive into many of the Pulp heroes.
The Phantom appeared in the 1996 film starring Billy Zane. That was fun, but never quite hit the mark for me.
I love the whole concept of The Phantom and it seems that it is books and comics that have done the character the most justice. I still hope for a shared cinematic universe featuring The Phantom, The Shadow, Doc Savage, Flash Gordon and more. Maybe one day.
Henrik Sahlstrom has illustrated many comic covers for The Phantom over the years. He has put together these two wonderful pieces – The Phantom with his companion Devil, both in his Skull Cave and on the cliffs of Bangalla.
The Phantom by Henrik Sahlstrom will be released on the 15th of March at 6pm GMT (UK time) at Vice Press and 12pm EST on Bottleneck Gallery.
