Cézanne: Portraits of a Life is returning to UK cinemas

Described by Picasso and Matisse as “the father of us all” Cézanne is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Despite this, Cézanne remains somewhat unknown and somewhat misunderstood, until now.

Exhibition on Screen is releasing of its most successful films, Cézanne: Portraits of a Life, dedicated to the life and work of Paul Cézanne, to UK cinemas on 29th November.

Narrated by multi-award-winning actor Brian Cox, and directed by BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Phil Grabsky, CÉZANNE – PORTRAITS OF A LIFE gives viewers exclusive access to the first-ever exhibition devoted to the portraits by Cézanne. The film is re-released at UK cinemas to coincide with a major Cézanne exhibition at Tate Modern.

One cannot appreciate 20th-century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, MoMA in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, with correspondence from Cézanne himself, the film takes audiences to the places he lived and worked and sheds new light on an artist who is perhaps one of the least known and yet most important of all the Impressionists.

Over his life Cézanne painted almost 1000 paintings, 200 of which were portraits. For the first time since his death, fifty of those portraits were brought together in the exhibition Cézanne Portraits that travelled to London, New York, Washington D.C. and Paris. These portraits provide the backbone to this moving cinematic film. As well as offering an unprecedented level of insight into the exhibition, the film features interviews with curators, art experts and the artist’s great-grandson Philippe Cézanne.
