Board Game Review: Marvel Dice Throne – “Fast-paced and a whole lot of fun”
I do love the Marvel comics and I am quite partial to tabletop gaming. Therefore, I was excited to give Marvel Dice Throne a spin when The Op got in touch to see if I would like to play it. I was aware of the original Dice Throne game, and had seen this new one on Kickstarter last year. If you had backed it on Kickstarter you would have got one big box containing all eight characters that have been released so far.
The retail versions, of which I was sent all of them, feature three boxes. One containing four characters – Scarlet Witch, Loki, Thor, Miles Morales’ Spider-Man – and two boxes each containing a couple of characters – Captain Marvel & Black Panther and Doctor Strange & Black Widow.
Marvel Dice Throne is a fast-playing, dice-rolling combat game that lets players battle as their favorite Marvel heroes in one-on-one duels, team battles, and free-for-alls!
Before I go any further, let me stress that every box is a standalone game. You can get one of the smaller boxes featuring two characters and you are good to go. You can also mix any Marvel Dice Throne characters together for additional gameplay, or even mix them with the original Dice Throne (designed by Nate Chatellier, Manny Trembley, and Gavan Brown).
Okay, opening the box (check out the unboxing video below) I was impressed with the design and look of the game. Each character has their own tray so, once you have popped out all the cardboard tokens and put them in, they contain everything you need to play – their own set of dice, player board, and unique deck of cards.
Everything feels top quality and each character feels unique. I particularly love the chunky dice each character has. I do love some chunky dice.
The game is, therefore, quick and easy to set up and is very quick to learn so you will be playing the game in no time. The player board has all the basic information you need for each character and then the new ability cards add in new rules.
Once set up, you pick up the dice and just roll. The goal of the game is to eliminate your opponent with combat points and be the last player standing to win. Each hero offers a broad range of different play styles, complexity level, and personalities.
For example, in the core four-character pack Scarlet Witch’s Probability Manipulation allows you to change the value of their dice roll, Thor is able to deal undefendable damage or gain Electrokinesis by throwing or retrieving Mjolnir, Loki outwits with Illusion that throws opponents for a loop, and Miles Morales: Spider-Man’s Invisibility allows him to dodge undefendable Attacks.
The fact you can mix and match characters for any two-player game is fantastic and means great replayability and a change in tactics for each new pairing.
I had a lot of fun with the game. It is quick to set up and fast-paced to play with each game taking about 30 minutes. A perfect game to have during a gaming day to play between some of your bigger board games or if you just want a quick game or two. It would also be a good one to take down to the pub.
My only complaint is that I wish there were more villains in these initial releases. I am sure there will be some down the line, but it is a shame that most pairings involve two superheroes going head-to-head. A small complaint, but just one of those little things I had to mention.
All in all, I can heartily recommend Marvel Dice Throne. The fact that you can play with any box is great so if you just wanted to try it out you can pick up a two-character box and check it out.
