This August ARROW brings us La Haine, Bliss, Eyes Without A Face, Subspecies and more

Key highlights this AUGUST on the alternative streaming service ARROW include an extraordinary, award-winning pulpy Indonesian actioner, a superb cult shocker about a hard-partying, blood-craving L.A. artist, a season of B-movie mayhem, crazed animals, giallo classics, French cult horror, and much more…

August starts with a red-hot blast of VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH, from acclaimed Indonesian director Edwin (Postcards from the Zoo) and based on the novel by Eka Kurniawan.

Winner of the Golden Leopard at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, this is a pulpy, energetic throwback to 80s South East Asian action and coming-of-age cinema about a young man who can’t get it up. With echoes of early Takashi Miike, VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH is a wild and unexpectedly poignant meditation on toxic masculinity and a culture steeped in violence from one of Indonesia’s most exciting directorial voices… and you can see it first and furious on ARROW.

Also in August, ARROW present director Joe Begos’ (The Mind’s Eye) third feature, BLISS, a blood-drenched masterpiece that has drawn comparisons to the films of Gaspar Noé and Abel Ferrara. Struggling through a seemingly endless creative rut, hard-partying and Los-Angeles-based artist Dezzy Donahue (Dora Madison, Friday Night Lights) can’t stop the resulting bad streak of problems, including unpaid rent and professional stagnation. In an effort to combat her tough luck, Dezzy throws caution to the wind, indulges in heavy drugs and rages her nights away. Gradually, though, the party starts to end, and in its place, Dezzy finds herself thirsting for blood and suffering from terrifying visions.

Seasons in August include The Subspecies Collection, ARROW’s latest film series from Charles Band and Full Moon Studios. This epic vampiric five-film collection is soaked in blood, packed full of practical effects and features the four-film Subspecies series, as well as the spin-off, Vampire Journals; Tooth and Claw, where you’ll meet the animals of the ARROW menagerie, in a curated season full of all of the critters that you’d least like to meet vying for your attention and probably the meat off of your bones too, including rampant apes, gnawing rats, flapping blood-sucking bats, slithering constricting snakes, brutal bears, hungry sharks, caustic jellyfish, and killer crocs; and FIIIGHT!, featuring action-packed films showcasing the best scraps on ARROW, inspired by the brilliant and bruising beatdowns in VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH, with titles including Versus, The Sword and the Claw, and Sister Street Fighter.

ALSO SHOWING: Powerful French classics EYES WITHOUT A FACE and LA HAINE, Sherilyn Fenn in the sultry horror fantasy MERIDIAN, disturbing Australian serial killer thriller HOUNDS OF LOVE, Vinegar Syndrome Selects, and much more…

New Seasons this August

From August 5: FIIIGHT!

FIIIGHT! is a curated season of films showcasing the best scraps on ARROW, inspired by the brilliant and bruising beatdowns in ‘Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash’ – now available to our UK subscribers.

Sometimes you find out about some guys who did a number on your husband when he was just a little boy, or your brother disappears while investigating a drugs smuggling ring. You may be getting menaced by a tampon monster from another dimension, or even by a bunch of zombies and gangsters who’ve interrupted your prison break.

Maybe mutant frogs want to stop you from impregnating a harem of beauties in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, some bad dudes interrupt you and your new wife’s bubble bath, your wife is being held captive by a gang of martial arts masters, or your master’s dying wish was for you to unmask a gang of poisonous kung fu experts? Well, what are you gonna do about it? Well, you didn’t start it, but you’re damn well going to finish it. Sometimes you just gotta FIIIGHT!

Titles include: Versus, The Sword and the Claw, Sister Street Fighter, BFF Girls

From August 12: The Subspecies Collection

You’ve thrilled to the kills of the murderous miniature marionettes in The Puppet Master Collection and followed futuristic bounty hunter Jack Deth on his mission through time to save the world from Trancers, now ARROW presents our latest film series from Charles Band and Full Moon Studios: The Subspecies Collection. This epic vampiric five-film collection is soaked in blood, packed full of practical effects and features the four-film Subspecies series, as well as the spin-off, Vampire Journals.

Shot on location in Romania, the Subspecies films tell the tale of a young woman drawn into a vicious vampire struggle for power in the wake of the death of the vampire King, played by Phantasm’s Angus Scrimm. With stop motion animation and rod puppets used to portray the terrifying titular creatures, can Michelle defeat the evil Radu, who can use his blood to create monstrous minions known as Subspecies?

Titles include: Subspecies, Bloodstone: Subspecies II, Bloodlust: Subspecies III, Vampire Journals

From August 19: Tooth and Claw

Snapping teeth, deadly stingers, razor-sharp claws, leathery wings, furry death grips and even slimy trails all over you – the animals of the ARROW menagerie are gross and deadly, and Tooth and Claw is a curated season full of all of the critters that you’d least like to meet vying for your attention and probably the meat off of your bones too.

Rampant apes, gnawing rats, flapping blood-sucking bats, slithering constricting snakes, brutal bears, hungry sharks, caustic jellyfish, killer crocs — and even a chihuahua with a seniority complex — it’s dangerous out there, so best to just stay inside with us and watch everyone else get ripped apart… when animals attack!

Titles include: Sting of Death, Mighty Peking Man, Meridian, Reptile House

From August 26:

Vinegar Syndrome Selects

Seeing as how we’ve been showcasing so many films from films-like-nothing-else restoration heroes Vinegar Syndrome, we thought it was high time we had them scour our vaults and put together a collection of their favourite films on ARROW. So, here is Vinegar Syndrome co-founder Joe Rubin with a half-dozen of his top picks – all now showing on ARROW. Take it away, Joe!

“From the bounty of riches offered here, I’ve selected a few favourites. Each of these films is not only a standout in its genre, but a masterful piece of exploitation/horror filmmaking.”

Titles include: The Witch Who Came from the Sea, The Child, Toys are Not for Children, The Baby

AUGUST TITLES – IN DEPTH

AUGUST 5: LA HAINE

After a chaotic night of rioting in a marginal suburb of Paris, three young friends, Vinz, Hubert and Saïd, wander around unoccupied waiting for news about the state of health of a mutual friend who has been seriously injured when confronting the police.

THE WEAPON, THE HOUR, THE MOTIVE

Horny priests and self-flagellating nuns abound in Francesco Mazzei’s The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive, as police commissioner Franco Boito (Renzo Montagnani, Massacre in Rome) investigates the brutal murder of a young clergyman, only to enter into an affair with the dead man’s lover (Bedy Moratti, Calling All Police Cars).

THE KILLER RESERVED NINE SEATS

In Giuseppe Bennati’s The Killer Reserved Nine Seats, an assortment of wealthy degenerates – including Italian cult mainstays Andrea Scotti (Django, Prepare a Coffin) and Howard Ross (The Pyjama Girl Case) – answer the summons of an eccentric nobleman (Chris Avram, A Bay of Blood) and assemble in the theatre attached to his ancestral home, only to find themselves trapped in the decaying building while a savage killer picks them off Agatha Christie-style!

SMILE BEFORE DEATH

In Silvio Amadio’s Smile Before Death, familicide with a sprinkling of Oedipal love is the order of the day when teenager Nancy (Jenny Tamburi, The Suspicious Death of a Minor) returns home to discover the apparent suicide of her mother, and quickly comes to suspect that her stepfather (Silvano Tranquilli, The Bloodstained Butterfly) and his mistress (Rosalba Neri, The French Sex Murders) are to blame.

VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH

Ajo Kawir (Marthino Lio) is a fighter who fears nothing, not even death. But his raging urge to fight is driven by a secret – his impotence, resulting from a traumatic childhood memory. When he crosses paths with a tough female fighter named Iteung (Ladya Cheryl), Ajo gets beaten black and blue, but he also falls head over heels in love. Will Ajo’s path lead him to a happy life with Iteung, and, eventually, his own peace of mind?

AUGUST 12: SUBSPECIES

She phones her sister Rebecca and begs her to come to Bucharest to help her. With the aid of Mel Thompson of the US Embassy and Romanian policeman Lt. Marin she hunts for Michelle in the shadows of the sinister city.

BLOODLUST: SUBSPECIES III

Radu has been destroyed, and Michelle has been captured by Radu’s vile mother, Mummy. However, Mummy uses dark sorcery to bring Radu back to life and transports them back to Castle Vladislas to escape their pursuers. VAMPIRE JOURNALS

After witnessing the love of his life get turned into a vampire, Zachary destroys both her, and his master, and former protege of Ash. Serena. Zachary, armed with the enchanted sword of a great vampire slayer called Laertes, seeks out the rest of Serena’s bloodline to eradicate them. A spin-off of the popular SUBSPECIES vampire franchise.

BLISS

In need of creative inspiration, a professionally stagnant and hard-partying Los Angeles artist recklessly indulges in a series of drug binges. As the narcotics fly out of control, so does her newfound and inexplicable, yet unquenchable, craving for blood.

HOUNDS OF LOVE

Loosely based on real-life events, this harrowing psychological thriller from Australian writer-director Ben Young is set to join the likes of The Silence of the Lambs as one of the most gruelling serial killer movies ever realised.

In 1980s Perth, Australia, a depraved couple are abducting and murdering young girls. When seventeen-year-old Vicki Maloney accepts a ride from the duo late one night, she finds herself catapulted into a nightmare beyond her imagining.

Bolstered by astonishing performances from its three main leads, Hounds of Love is a bold and powerful piece of filmmaking which proves that Australian genre cinema is alive and well.
