Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick is one of the most crowd-pleasing movies of this year.  Every single button is pressed throughout the film, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Joseph Kosinski. Maverick returns to Top Gun to teach a crew of hotshots how to fly a near-impossible mission. The plot is basic but thrilling. Cruise’s talent and death-defying drive are put to good use at every turn, resulting in magnificent aerial combat. In a way that feels genuine rather than staged, the story evokes feelings of nostalgia. In addition, there’s a Lady Gaga song playing.

The Platform

The Platform shows how society may fall into an order of greed and gluttony so fast. As the title suggests, the setting of this dystopian drama is a high-rise jail, where all inmates eagerly anticipate the daily meal. Until the big event: lunchtime, inmates in this prison pass the time with pointless talk, reading, and sleep. It’s a powerful metaphor for society’s “haves” and “have-nots.” Goreng understands there’s just one way out: up. To rise, he must first fall. This film is a wonderful method to master Spanish numbers, as the characters continuously discuss those above and below them.

Hatching

Expect to be captivated by Hanna Bergholm’s debut movie, Hatching, about a decaying half-bird, half-human being who spurts slime. Tinja, a young gymnast, discovers an egg outside her mom blogger’s house in this strange and lovely Finnish tale. This child incubates an egg in her teddy bear till an animal she has named Alli hatches. Alli, Tinja’s pet and defender, is brought to life by animatronic wizards and begins to change into a mirror image of her.  E.T., Gremlins, and Eight Grade all come together in this movie.

Ambulance

With Michael Bay’s aesthetic in Ambulance, you’ll wish you could love something as much as his obsession with nauseating drone shots with an outcome of an incredibly fantastic time with the movie. To help his wife through emergency surgery, actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays a veterinarian. He turns to his crime lord adopted brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, for help after being ignored by the VA. An EMT (Eiza González) and a wounded police officer are stolen from an ambulance after a botched bank robbery. This epic LA chase and a crazy Gyllenhaal performance demonstrate that you have to give credit where credit is due to a filmmaker as bold as Bay.

RRR

This three-hour Telugu language film directed by SS Rajamouli is something you should never miss before this year ends. For the most part, it’s crucial to go into it with an open mind and an open heart since the show never ceases to amaze, even when you’re convinced that nothing could possibly top the fist-pumping action that came before. However, grasping the setting is secondary to the experience itself in RRR, which follows two men as they pursue their own destiny and rage against British colonial control in Northern India.

Turning Red

Ming (Sandra Oh) is a strict but loving mother to her 13-year-old daughter, Meilin “Mei” Lee (Rosalie Chiang). When Mei and her mother disagree about Mei’s drawings of crushable boy band members as mermen, Mei awakens to find herself turned into a red panda—with a fluffy tail and all—like Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, in a more lovable form.

The Batman

Not quite as daring as it could have been, director Matt Reeves’ take on the Dark Knight is nevertheless visually appealing. The Batman is a long, slow-burning adventure in the spirit of David Fincher’s Seven, with hauntingly stunning visuals and engaging performances from Robert Pattinson and Zo Kravitz. The Batman sets the basis for a richer, stranger kind of Batman movie, which hopefully will come true as a sequel that reunites everyone.
