Joker 2 – Lady Gaga is in talks to join the musical sequel
2019’s Joker directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix made $1 billion for Warner Bros. and has been one of their most critically acclaimed DC movie. I thought it was a great film, although part of me still feels Phillips simply wanted to do a Taxi Driver type movie, but could only get it greenlit if a comic book character was attached.
Talk of a sequel has been off and on ever since. I quite fancy the idea of every Joker movie being a different origin story for the character as he is such an unreliable narrator and it would help keep the mystique of the character alive.
Phillips recently announced the news that a script had been written called Joker: Folie à deux. Many people wondered whether this meant Harley Quinn would be involved or could it be a way of bringing in the recent Three Jokers storyline?
It seems that may well be the case as THR is reporting that Lady Gaga is in early talks to join the sequel. There is no word on the character she would be playing, but Quinn does seem the obvious pick and, as Joker set up yet another alternate DC universe, there is no need to worry about Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad version of the character disappearing.
What is of interest is the fact it may well be a musical. This would again make sense if Lady Gaga joins the case. She did wonders in 2018’s A Star Is Born. Plus it is not that much to ramp up Joaquin’s dancing from the first movie to include full-blown musical numbers. Many TV shows have also had musical episodes that often delve inside the minds of the various protagonists and, if done well, such as Buffy’s Once More, With Feeling episode, it can be magical.
I am still not fully convinced we need a sequel, but I did feel the same about the first film and that ended up surprising me. Therefore, I will wait and see what else develops on this one.
What do you want to see in a Joker sequel?
