Idris Elba grants Tilda Swinton three wishes in the first teaser for George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing
Three Thousand Years of Longing is based on the 1994 short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” by A.S. Byatt. George Miller (Mad Max) co-wrote the screenplay with Augusta Gore. The film stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
Dr. Alithea Binnie (Swinton) is a level-headed academic who doesn’t believe in magical nonsense. But while attending a conference in Istanbul, she chances upon an ancient Djinn (Elba), who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually, she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.
This is very much a teaser, but it does show some incredible imagery and I am very much looking forward to seeing more.
The film will premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
The full trailer is due out tomorrow, 20th May, and the film itself is out on 31st August 2022.
