Margot Robbie is Barbie in the first image from the Greta Gerwig directed film

Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. Filming is underway on the Mattel Films and WB project and this first image of Margo Robbie as the titular character has been released. It was shown at during the Warner Bros. presentation at Las Vegas’ CinemaCon. The film is due out on 21st July 2023.

Plot details are scarce but Robbie will be joined by Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef and Will Ferrell. Gosling will be playing Ken.

Gerwig officially signed on to direct the film in July 2021. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie said the film’s goal was to subvert expectations

Producers on “Barbie” also include Robbie via LuckyChap with Tom Ackerley; Mattel’s Robbie Brenner; and David Heyman for Heyday Films. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are executive producers.

I know next to nothing about any of the animated Barbie films and I have no idea what this live-action film will be like. However, I am intrigued to see what Gerwig and Baumbach have come up with.
