Board Game Review – Fast & Furious: Highway Heist

Fast & Furious: Highway Heist, from Funko Games and Prospero Hall, is the board game based on the Fast & Furious movies – the crazy later movies, not the more grounded street racing original.

As you can gather from that opening sentence, I am not a huge fan of the film franchise although I do watch them from time to time when I am in the mood for some mindless over-the-top action.

However, I will say that I had a blast with the board game.

Here is the official blurb.

  • HIGH-SPEED HEIST: Get ready for an exciting new mission based on the blockbuster movie series, playing as Dom, Brian, Letty, Roman, and the rest of Team Toretto on a harrowing high-speed heist! Go up against heavily-armed enemies with your hot cars, daring driving, and jaw-dropping vehicle-to-vehicle leaps of faith
  • TEAM WORK: Whether you are taking down a swerving semi filled with valuable cargo, stopping a rampaging tank in its tracks, or bringing down a high-tech helicopter as it rains fire from the skies, you’ll have to work together to take advantage of every team member’s strengths. It’s up to you to pull off the job no other crew can do!
  • EXCITING ACTION: Character stats combine with vehicle stats to create unique abilities each game — try multiple combinations! Players jump in and out of their vehicles to accomplish missions, mirroring the exciting action of the movies
  • 3-IN-1 GAMEPLAY: Three different scenarios — Semi Heist, Tank Assault, Chopper Takedown — for a three-games-in-one experience. Gameplay drives strategic planning and teamwork!
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Ideal for ages 12+ with 2–4 players and a 60-minute gameplay

First of all, the game looks great on the table. It does not take up too much space and the components are well made, although the cars and the little character posts are a little fiddly. It all fits nicely in the box and is quick and easy to set-up and break down.

I did have to read the rule book a few times and watch a how-to-play video before I could get my head around the game. However, as is often the case, if you set-up and start playing the game and take your time it all begins to click and in no time at all you are driving down the freeway with your family, jumping out onto the bonnet of your car, leaping from one to the other, smashing into tanks and have a crazy-cool time.

On occasion, a board game based on a film may look cool, but don’t feel like the movie. This does not have that problem. It really does feel like part of the FF universe doing crazy stunts to bring down the bad guy. Yet it is still fun to play if you know nothing about them or a not that big a fan of the movie series.

Your characters don’t die so it is just like the movie and this game really does take the theme and just goes with it.

The cooperative element also works very well. You plan your actions, check what stunts you can do and away you go with a real feeling of being a team, or should I say…..family?

It is the kind of game that will result in some funny moments that will have you talking about it weeks later.

You get three missions in the box. During set-up, players choose one of the characters from the film, along with one of the cars. As you can mix and match cars and characters there is quite a bit of replayability with the various missions.

Fast And Furious: Highway Heist is one of those games you can bring to the table when you have a few friends over and have a lot of fun and laughter as you work to bring down the bad guy.

Well worth a look if you love the Fast and Furious movies, but worth checking out even if you are not a fan of the films.
