Review: Cannibal Mukbang is hot, horny and hungry horror
Promising Young Woman meets Bones and All in a lip-smacking “good for her” horror film. Written and directed by Aimee Kuge, Cannibal Mukbang is a horror-comedy starring April Consalo (What Lies Behind the Walls) and Nate Wise (Dimland).
Have a little taste of the trailer before we sink our teeth in…
Mark (Wise) is an introverted puppy dog of a man. Shy, sensitive and avoidant of any attachment, Mark would rather run away than return the flirting when he finds himself mid-meet-cute with Ash (Consalo) in the snack aisle of his local convenience store. Until she hits him with her car in the parking lot and takes him home.
Ash is a mukbanger, streaming videos of herself eating online for her viewers and subscribers. But it is not just pizza, pasta and nachos that Ash likes to chow down on. Ash is also a cannibal who hunts down evil men to kill, chop up and ingest. Smitten, Mark is soon not just eating out of the palm of Ash’s hand, but going full Renfield and helping her murder and munch these bad dudes.
With the pair’s relationship getting ever hotter and steamier, and the body count rapidly rising, how will it all shake out when things reach boiling point?
Cannibal Mukbang is an initial slow burn, teasing you with small plates and amuse-bouches, but serves up a killer main course that will leave you full and satisfied.
This is a real calling-card debut for Aimee Kuge, who serves up portions of backstory at just the right time and ekes out the tease of when Mark and Ash will make love long enough for it to be a simmer not a snooze. Cannibal Mukbang is also self-aware enough to directly call out the ‘manic pixie dream girl’ main character, before subverting the term and spitting it back out in a primal scream of female rage.
April Consalo really shines and based on her natural camera charisma and excellent chemistry with Nate Wise – who manages to keep the nice guy routine the right side of attractive, without stepping into simp – should start to be cast in absolutely everything extremely soon.
Juggling sex and horror on film is no easy feat, but Kuge again does exactly that with aplomb. Love scenes are still sexy even when they are taking place amongst impressively grisly gore effects from Yellow Moth FX and Kuge has served up a stylish, saucy and shocking first film.
A cannibalistic cult classic in the making, Cannibal Mukbang is hot, horny and hungry horror.
Cannibal Mukbang is available on all digital platforms and will be released on Blu-ray on April 22nd.
