Rust – The first trailer for the Alec Baldwin Western has been released
Rust is the Western film that involved Alec Baldwin using a prop gun that accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza during production.
In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel).
According to Variety, “the on-set death of Hutchins resulted in Baldwin being charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the case was dismissed in July of last year on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence. However, armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed is serving an 18-month sentence for Hutchins’ death after it was determined that a live bullet had been loaded into Baldwin’s prop gun.”
As part of a settlement in a civil suit with Halyna’s widow Matt Hutchins, Baldwin and director Souza agreed to finish the film with Halyna’s husband as an executive producer. Any of the proceeds from the film’s sale will be donated to a fund for Halyna’s son.
Rust will release in US cinemas and on digital May 2.
