Dungeon Crawler Carl has been picked up for a TV adaptation

So the apocalypse reallywill be televised!

I am a huge fan of the Dungeon Crawler Carl book series by Matt Dinniman. Therefore, it is no surprise that the series has been picked up for a TV adaptation. The books are funny, silly, bizarre, poignant and action packed so there is a huge potential for a TV show.

Here is the book synopsis:

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the Dungeon. Survival is optional. Keeping the viewers entertained is not.

According to Deadline, Universal International Studios and Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door are set to develop the show. There is no word on whether it will be live-action or animated.

Chris Yost, best known for writing Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and Disney+’s The Mandalorian, is set to adapt the book.

The first novel sold more than a million copies and was originally self-published as an e-book and audiobook. A new hardcover version of the book is due out today. Five sequels have followed.

“I’m excited to share this crazy story with a much wider audience,” said Dinniman. “I think it’s found a great home at Fuzzy Door and Universal International Studios.”

Kelsey Balance, SVP Global Scripted Series at UIS, said Dinniman was “a world builder with a truly original voice.”

“Dungeon Crawler Carl has captured the enthusiasm of fans across the world,” she added. “We cannot wait to dive into this world with Matt, our partners at Fuzzy Door and the brilliant Chris Yost to bring this universe to the screen.”

“Matt captures genre-bending at its best with his laugh-out-loud and emotionally gut-wrenching characters,” added Fuzzy Door President Erica Huggins. “That, coupled with the semi-grounded but unique sci-fi world Dungeon Crawler Carl takes place in, makes for an ideal Fuzzy Door project.”

Who do you feel about a Dungeon Crawler Carl series? Who could play Carl? Who should voice Donut?

  1. No one but Jeff Hayes should EVER voice Donut. Patrick Warburton could do Carl, especially if animated.

  2. My only hope is that this title is treated like an erotic anime and we are delivered at least a thousand episodes. And exactly what Kelly said about the voices.
