Red Sun – The Western starring Charles Bronson, Alain Delon, Toshiro Mifune and Ursula Andress has got a new 4K restoration

STUDIOCANAL has announced a brand-new 4K restoration of the thrilling and unique western Red Sun as part of the Cult Classics Collection. The samurai sword joins the six gun to rule the West, as a cowboy and a samurai team up on a revenge mission in one of the wildest, and weirdest, westerns ever made, starring Charles Bronson (Death Wish), Alain Delon (Le Samourai), Toshiro Mifune (The Seven Samurai) and Ursula Andress (Dr No).

Billed as the first East meets West Western, and directed by Terence Young, RED SUN is based on a true story from the American Wild West of 1870. When outlaw Link (Charles Bronson) is betrayed by his gang during a train robbery, he is forced by the Japanese Ambassador to help regain a priceless sword stolen by Link’s double-crossing partner Gauche (Alain Delon). Link and the Ambassador’s bodyguard, Kuroda (Toshiro Mifune), travel the West in pursuit of Gauche, attempting to lure him out by taking his girlfriend (Ursula Andress) as hostage. Although Kuroda plans to kill Gauche straight away, Link needs him alive to find the loot from their last robbery. Joined in an uneasy alliance, they have only seven days to find Gauche or Kuroda must follow his samurai code of honour and die by his own sword.

Rated by no less an authority than Quentin Tarantino as one of the best spaghetti westerns ever made, alongside the likes of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars, the film is directed by Terence Young (Dr No, From Russia With Love and Thunderball), features a score by Maurice Jarre (Oscar winner for Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and A Passage to India), was co-scripted by William Roberts (The Magnificent Seven), and beautifully filmed by Henri Alekan (Oscar nominated for Best Cinematography for Roman Holiday).

Also known as Soleil Rouge, RED SUN was an international co-production, filmed in Spain, and was a big hit in Europe and Japan. Cinema Retro calls it an ‘enthralling Western’ that ‘has to be seen to be believed’.

RED SUN is available to buy on 4K UHD SteelBook, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital from 29th July 2024, and is available to pre-order HERE.
