Vishniac – Watch the trailer for the documentary about 20th Century Photographer Roman Vishniac

He was difficult and flamboyant, a shameless self-promoter, bender of the truth and master of reinvention. He was also one of the groundbreaking photographers of the 20th century – a brilliant artist whose body of work spans decades, continents, the catastrophic fallout from two world wars and pioneering microscopy that transformed the nature of science photography. Roman Vishniac may be best known for his iconic images of Jewish life in Eastern Europe from 1935 through 1938. Few predicted that less than a decade later, these communities would be wiped out in the Holocaust, and Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world.

Now for the first time, his story comes to life as a feature documentary. This retrospective Vishniac’s work is also the story of the daughter who grew up in his shadow and sought to break free of his grip, only to eventually come around and embrace his legacy.

Directed by Laura Bialis (REFUSENIKS, ROCK IN THE RED ZONE), the film was made with the full cooperation of Vishniac’s daughter Mara Vishniac Kohn.

Premieres in New York on Friday 19th January 2024 and then in Los Angeles on 2nd February 2024.
