Terry Gilliam wants Johnny Depp to play Satan in Carnival At The End Of Days

Johnny Depp in 2009’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

During the Red Sea Film Festival, John Bleasdale of Variety and Live for Films fame spoke to Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Time Bandits) about his next project.

Called Carnival at the End of Days, Gilliam described it as…

A simple tale of God wiping out humanity for fucking up his beautiful garden Earth. There’s only one character who’s trying to save humanity and that’s Satan, because without humanity he’s lost his job and he’s an eternal character and so to live without a job is terrible. So he finds some young people and he tries to convince God that these young people are the new Adam and Eve. God still gets to wipe out humanity. It’s a comedy.

Gilliam is co-writing the film with Christopher Brett Bailey and he would like Johnny Depp to play Satan.

Gilliam and Depp did work together in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and on the early version of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, but that ended up falling apart and is documented in the fantastic documentary, Lost In La Mancha. The film did eventually get made starring Adam Driver and was released in 2018.

The new film is in the early stages but I do like the sound of it.
