Netflix has revealed the release date for The Society of the Snow, the new film by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage), which will represent Spain at the 96th Oscar Awards, and which will arrive on Netflix on 4 January (after its theatrical release in December in select cinemas).

In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

The film was the closing film of the 80th Venice International Film Festival, and received the Audience Award at the 71st San Sebastian International Film Festival, achieving the highest score in the history of the festival.

The Society of the Snow is produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida and J.A. Bayona. Starring Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella and Esteban Bigliardi with a screenplay by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego, based on the novel by Pablo Vierci.

The filming of The Society of the Snow took place in Sierra Nevada (Andalusia), Montevideo (Uruguay) and in different locations in the Andes (both in Chile and Argentina) including El Valle de las Lágrimas, the real location of the plane crash.

J.A. Bayona, an internationally renowned Spanish filmmaker, made his directorial debut with The Orphanage (2007) at Cannes, winning numerous awards, including seven Goyas. His next film, The Impossible (2012), marked his entry into English language cinema with five Goya awards, including Best Director. Other titles include A Monster Calls (2016), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018); executive producer of Marrowbone (2017) and I Hate New York (2018). A leading director for television, Bayona has also directed episodes of Penny Dreadful (2014-2016) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022). The Society of the Snow is his fifth feature film, and his first in Spanish in sixteen years.
