Henry Cavill is starring in a Warhammer 40,000 series for Amazon
Over the past few months, Henry Cavill announced his return as Superman. We saw him back in the suit during the Black Adam post-credit scene. He left the role of Geralt in The Witcher – the exact reason is still unclear, but many think it is because he was not happy with the way the showrunners were deviating from the original stories and lore.
During this time James Gunn and Peter Safran were named Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios. Obviously, that meant there would be some changes.
This week Gunn announced he was writing a new script for a Superman movie that would feature a younger Superman and that Henry Cavill would not be playing the character.
Cavill confirmed this news and, while you could tell it was upsetting for him, his response was classy and from the heart.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter is saying Cavill is attached to star and executive produce a series adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, the science-fiction fantasy miniature wargame that is set up at Amazon.
That is great news for Cavill as he is a huge fan of the game.
“Games Workshop is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement in principle for Amazon to develop Games Workshop’s intellectual property into film and television productions and for Games Workshop to grant Amazon associated merchandising rights,” the company said.
“While the parties have reached agreement on material commercial terms, the project is wholly dependent on and subject to contracts being agreed and entered into, which the parties are working towards.”
It all sounds very promising but that last sentence does mean that there is a very slight chance things could still go south. I really hope that doesn’t happen as I would love to see a Warhammer 40K show. I would also hate to see Cavill lose another chance to star in an adaptation of something he loves.
Cavill had this to say about the deal.
The game itself is set in the grim darkness of the far future, where mighty armies clash on countless war-torn worlds and Humanity stands alone, beset on all sides by the threats of the heretic, the mutant and the alien. There is no mercy. There is no respite.
Players us various miniatures of different factions – soldiers, vehicles and more – to fight battles against each other on tabletop battlegrounds. There are many different factions – Space Marines, Tyranids, Necrons, Sisters of Battle, T’au Empire, Adeptus Mechanicus, Chaos Knights and more – so there are plenty of choices for players.
There are more details (including the free core rules on the official site).
The game has huge amounts of lore involved with many novels delving into different factions and characters so there is a huge amount of potential for a Warhammer 40K TV show and films.
Cavill would be a perfect fit for the show. Fingers crossed it all works out for the best.
