Karen Gillan, Margaret Sophie Stein and Jermaine Fowler star in Late Bloomers
We’re Doin’ Great and Park Pictures announced today that Karen Gillan (Dual, Jumanji, Guardians of the Galaxy), Margaret Sophie Stein (Bullets Over Broadway) and Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You, The Drop) will star in the comedy Late Bloomers directed by Lisa Steen and written by Anna Greenfield. Kevin Nealon (Weeds, Saturday Night Live) and Talia Balsam (Mad Men, Divorce, Master) co-star. Written by Anna Greenfield, the film is loosely based on her experience living in Brooklyn in her 20s. Frequent collaborators, Steen and Greenfield also worked together on the short films Sundowners and Stepdaddy which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and the 2019 SXSW Film Festival respectively, as well as short films Games for Girls and New Adult.
Late Bloomers is a comedy about Louise, an aimless millennial (Karen Gillan), who drunkenly breaks her hip, landing her in physical therapy. There, she makes an elderly Polish BFF who speaks no English (Margaret Sophie Stein). This unlikely friendship gives her the courage to face what she’s been running from all along: Her mother’s younger-onset Alzheimer’s. Jermaine portrays Brick, Louise’s Craigslist roommate/landlord. Nealon and Balsam portray Louise’s parents.
The film will be produced by Alexandra Barreto and Taylor Feltner for We’re Doin’ Great and Sam Bisbee for Park Pictures. Shot by cinematographer John de Menil, the film just wrapped principal photography in Brooklyn, NY. UTA will represent worldwide sales.Producers Alexandra Barreto and Taylor Feltner were accepted into the Sundance Institute Feature Film Creative Producing Fellowship with Late Bloomers in 2020. The project was also included in the 2021 Sundance Catalyst Spring Slate, 2020 Film Independent Directors Lab, 2020 IFP Market, and 2019 Film Independent Fast Track.
Late Bloomers marks Lisa Steen’s feature film directorial debut. She was a co-producer on the feature film Plus One starring Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid and was showrunner on Epic Night, an interactive series for Eko Studios. In addition to the previously mentioned short films, writer Anna Greenfield wrote the play All Girls and wrote and co-produced Haunt the Johnsons, a scripted comedy audio series for Audible. Award winning actress Karen Gillan is known around the world for her character Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy / Marvel Universe, as well as Ruby Roundhouse in the Jumanji series and as Amy Pond, over three seasons of Dr. Who. Polish actress/writer Margaret Sophie Stein (Małgorzata Zajączkowska) has been acting for more than 4 decades in her native Poland and around the world. Credits include Mark Tarlov’s Simply Irresistible, Glen Jordan’s Sarah Plain and Tall and Paul Mazursky’s Enemies: A Love Story. Broadway credits include Noel Coward’s Present Laughter. Stein is represented by Studio Gama in Poland.Jermaine Fowler recently co-starred in Stephanie Allyne and Tig Nataro’s Am I OK? which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and will be released later this year. A versatile actor and comedian, Kevin Nealon credits include Weeds, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and writing and performing on Saturday Night Live, for which he was nominated for an Emmy. Nealon is represented by The Gersh Agency and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Actress Talia Balsam can currently be seen in Mariama Diallo’s Sundance hit Master currently streaming on Amazon. She has co-starred in many critically acclaimed and groundbreaking series including Mad Men and Divorce with featured roles in many others, including The Good Wife and Homeland.
