Here is our first look at Batgirl from the new DC movie
Leslie Grace has shared an image of herself in costume as Batgirl and it looks very much inspired by the Batgirl of Burnside comic book story. The film is written by Birds of Prey’s Christina Hodson and will be an origin movie.
As this is a DC / Warner Bros. production there is the question of just where, when and how this fits in with other movies.
The film also stars J.K. Simmons as James Gordon who we saw in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Batman vs Superman. Those films had Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, however, the Batgirl movie has got Michael Keaton in it as Bruce Wayne.
Keaton is going to appear as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the forthcoming The Flash movie, which is based on the Flashpoint comic book story and is rumoured to be wiping out Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman. That would have been a good way for Warner Bros. and DC to tidy up their Cinematic Universe. Yet we still have The Batman which features Robert Pattinson as Batman and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. That means this new Batgirl movie has no connection with that one.
In conclusion, who the hell knows what is going on with the DC / Warner Bros. movies? Of course, if it is a good movie then it shouldn’t really matter. It’s just the comic book fan in me would like it all to be a little clearer. I wish they had a main DC Cinematic Universe and then had a spin-off banner called Elseworlds that would have films like Joker, The Batman and whatever else. Just so it was a bit tidier.
Let’s get back to Batgirl.
The film is set to be released on HBO Max in 2022 and will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. It also stars Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns/Firefly which is wonderful to hear (he has been great as Robotman in Doom Patrol).
The initial draw for me on this project are Keaton and Fraser, but I look forward to seeing a trailer and synopsis so I can get a better feel for the look and tone they are going for.
What do you want to see in the Batgirl movie and what do you think of the costume?
