Watch the trailer for Margrete: Queen of the North

A sweeping period drama starring Trine Dyrholm (Thomas Vinterberg’s THE CELEBRATION), Margrete – Queen of the North is based on Denmark’s real-life Queen Margrete, one of Europe’s most significant royals.

An epic tale of power and lineage, with the fate of the modern world in the balance, MARGRETE is about a woman ahead of her time, who overcame adversaries and conspiracies, made sacrifices, and took great strides. Crucially, Queen Margrete is credited with establishing one of the longest peaceful alliances between Scandinavian countries. In MARGRETE— QUEEN OF THE NORTH, that very alliance is put to the test when enemies threaten to undo the fragile coalition.

The year is 1402. Margrete has achieved what no man has managed before. She has gathered Denmark, Norway and Sweden into a peace-oriented union, which she single handedly rules through her young, adopted son, Erik. The union is beset by enemies, however, and Margrete is therefore planning a marriage between Erik and an English princess. An alliance with England should secure the union’s status as an emerging European power but a breathtaking conspiracy is under way that can tear Margrete and all she believes in apart.

The film stars Trine Dyrholm (THE CELEBRATION, NICO, 1988), Søren Malling (The Killing), Jakob Oftebro (KON-TIKI), Morten Hee Andersen (Deliver Us) and Paul Blackthorne (LAGAAN).

Margrete: Queen of the North hits select cinemas on 17th December 2021.
