Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver join Paul Schrader’s Master Gardener
Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter starring Oscar Isaac is debuting at the Venice Film Festival, but there is already word on his next project, Master Gardener.
Schrader is directing from his original screenplay and the film has Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver in the lead roles.
According to Deadline, the film follows a meticulous horticulturist (Edgerton) who is devoted to tending the grounds of a beautiful estate and pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager (Weaver). When she demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece, it unlocks dark secrets from a buried violent past.
I loved Schrader’s First Reformed back in 2017 and I’m looking forward to seeing The Card Counter. This new film also sounds intriguing and Edgerton and Weaver are both great. It will be interesting to see how this one develops.
“When the idea first started it was one of my male protagonists but then these two women intervened and it became something more complex and unique,” Schrader told Deadline.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin early next year in the southern United States.
