Casino movies with a difference
A movie with a difference, Rain Man undoubtedly heads up the list. A tale of two brothers, one of whom is rich and selfish, the other an autistic savant locked in a mental institution. Upon their father’s death, the younger son heads over to take care of his older brother, taking him to LA with him. From their events within the movie unfold as the younger brother discovers his autistic brother’s talents. The movie heads into the casino-experts, where Raymond is a master at card counting, and develops further as the brothers connect on a deeper, emotional level, winning in life rather than the casino.
Ocean’s Eleven is another casino-themed movie, and like Rain Man, is not really about playing there. Instead, this movie is about a gang of thieves who decide to take on a casino boss in order to simultaneously rob three Las Vegas casinos, all at the same time. The ensemble cast provides a huge amount of entertainment, each character bringing their own unique talents to the team. There are, of course, twists and turns throughout the heist, with things almost going wrong. Never before have so many rooted for the ne’er do wells! At the end of the day, this is one of the best heist (and casino) movies out there.
More traditional casino movies
If you want something more traditional, then the aptly named Casino is the movie for you. Directed by Martin Scorsese, this is arguably the greatest casino movie of all time. Featuring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci, this movie is filled with top-level movie alum. The story takes place in Las Vegas, revolving around a casino that’s run by the mob. It’s also based on true events, which just adds to the excitement that is so common with casinos. Illustrating the rise and fall of casino mobs, it also celebrates casinos and how they really have a life of their own.
No casino movie list would be complete without adding The Gambler to the list. An American Crime drama, this film takes on the more depressing side of casinos. It focuses on the life of a gambler who lost everything when he became addicted to gambling. For those looking for something a little more upbeat, there’s Casino Royale. The first entrant for Daniel Craig’s new Bond, it’s all about baccarat. This being 007, things do tend to go his way. On top of this, the movie takes us back to the iconic opening line for the character as well as showcasing the casino glitz and mind-games in all its deserved glory.
