Jon Hamm will be the star of the new Fletch film

Fletch was originally a series of novels by Gregory Mcdonald which started in 1974. The first novel was the basis of the 1985 comedy thriller that starred Chevy Chase as the title character. This was followed in 1989 by the film Fletch Lives.

Since then there has been talk of various films and TV shows based on the original novels, but nothing came of them.

It seems like Fletch will indeed live once more as Jon Hamm will be starring as the title character. Hamm will also produce alongside Connie Tavel. Greg Mottola (Superbad, Arrested Development) will direct, from a screenplay by Zav Borow.

THR says that in the new film Fletch will find himself in the middle of multiple murders, one of which has him as a prime suspect. While attempting to prove his innocence, Fletch must find his fiancée’s stolen art collection, an inheritance she has acquired after her father goes missing and is presumed dead.

“Fletch’s duration over audiences- whether told on paper or the big screen- entertains all and we could not be more thrilled to see what twenty-first-century twist these artists create,” Miramax CEO Bill Block said in a statement.

I can see Hamm being great as Fletch. Obviously a lot depends on the quality of the screenplay for a mystery thriller, but I look forward to seeing what they do with it.
