Stephen Tobolowsky says there is a Groundhog Day TV show in development
“Bing!”
Stephen Tobolowsky played Ned “Needlenose” Ryerson in the brilliant Groundhog Day film. Talk of a sequel pops up every now and again. However, it seems things are moving forward as Tobolowsky has mentioned there is a TV show in development that picks up 30 years after the original film. He mentioned the news on the Production Meeting Podcast.
One of the producers – I was working on The Goldbergs or Schooled, one of those shows over on the Sony lot, and one of them saw me and goes, ‘Oh, Stephen! Stephen! We’re working on a Groundhog Day TV show. Could you be Ned for the TV show?’
I go, ‘Sure. Yeah. No problem’… But it’s Ned thirty years later. What has his life become?
I’d be up for that kind of sequel and it will be interesting to find out what happened to the town of Punxsutawney in the intervening years. Netflix’s Russian Doll TV show has shown that time loop shows can work and I do like Stephen Tobolowsky. Oh, and there was the Day Break TV show back in 2006 that starred Taye Diggs which also featured a time loop.
Obviously, it is still very early days on this one so no word on what other characters will be in the show. I look forward to learning more about the project.
What would you like to see in a Groundhog Day film?
Thanks to Marty for the news.
