Could the Escape From New York remake star Wyatt Russell? Leigh Whannell talks about the new film
The remake of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York has been in development for a long time. Various directors and actors have been attached over the years, but none of them have stuck.
However, Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, The Invisible Man) is currently on board to write the reboot and he was talking to AITH about the possibility of Kurt Russell’s son, Wyatt Russell, to play Snake Plissken.
It’s funny, I’ve been so busy working on this film where I haven’t had time to circle back around on that project. Sometimes these press releases go out before you’re ready, you’re like, ‘Don’t tell the world!’ I don’t actually know, I really don’t. That is an iconic character and I think that Snake Plissken is a part of people’s childhood and their adolescence. It’s near and dear to them. So I would tread very carefully with that.
I feel like a property like that doesn’t have the same freedom as maybe something like The Invisible Man does. He has more elasticity as a character because so many people have had their fingerprints on that. There’s been TV shows and comic books, whereas with Escape from New York, we’re talking about one definitive movie here and you don’t want to mess with it. We’ll see what happens.
I did enjoy Wyatt Russell’s performance in 2018’s Overlord. I’d quite happily watch him play Snake in a new film, but I don’t know whether that is the right way to go with this remake. Obviously, it is highly unlikely that this would happen, but good to hear Whannell talking about the film. I thoroughly enjoyed Upgrade and I am looking forward to seeing his take on The Invisible Man. I am curious as to what he will do with Carpenter’s classic and good to hear he realises just what the film means to so many people.
I’m really not sure what I want from a new version of Escape From New York. What would you like to see in the remake and who do you feel should play Snake?
