UPDATED: There is a Joker sequel in the works and Todd Phillips may be making more DC Origin movies
Despite director Todd Phillips saying that the Joker movie was just going to be a standalone film, we all knew there would be another one once it passed the $1 Billion mark!
According to THR, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker film, which he will again co-write with Scott Silver. Still early days, so no word on the plot, but I would happily have it just be yet another origin story for the character as he is a very unreliable narrator! Will it feature Batman?
Phillips spoke to Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich and put forward the idea for him to take on the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters’ origin stories.
Emmerich did not commit to that, but it seems Phillips walked away with rights to one more DC character, but it is not clear which one. We don’t even know if it is a hero or villain.
Phillips did great things with Joker and his vision worked well for that film. With Hollywood being Hollywood and it is all about the money, it is no surprise to hear that Phillips may be directing another origin movie for a different DC character.
I’m happy for DC and Warner Bros. to do a series of origin films, but they don’t all have to be by the same person. Find a different director suited for each one, or as they did with Phillips, take a gamble on someone who has a singular vision on a character. That’s not to say that Phillips can’t do great things again, but we will have to wait and see.
What character would you like to see Phillips tackle next? Lex Luthor could be a good one to do, but there are so many great characters out there. It would be nice to see one that hasn’t been on the big screen before.
UPDATE: Deadline is now reporting that the sequel, while still likely, has not been given the go-ahead and the meeting THR reported on did not take place. It seems there are currently no other DC Origin movies planned.
Those sources add that the linchpin of today’s THR story — that a week after Joker‘s opening, Phillips met with Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich to pitch a portfolio of DC character origin stories — is as flat false as earlier stories that Martin Scorsese contemplated directing the first Joker (Scorsese was originally going to be a producer but dropped out because of his crowded schedule). Multiple sources said no such October 7 meeting between Phillips and Emmerich occurred, and that Phillips doesn’t want to follow Joker by overseeing other DC character films. What he has talked about in interviews is that when Joker was in its inception, there were discussions of a DC Black initiative. He instead focused on Joker. That was a long time ago.
